Here are ten good reasons why Christians should encourage inter faith engagement alongside the promotion of the truth that is in Jesus to all people:

1. Inter faith is not multifaith. To be multifaith is to feel an affinity with aspects of more than one religion or world-view and to believe that no one is superior to the others. This term is different to Inter faith which is about useful contact, keeping integrity, between different religions, for the common good.

2. Common good. Our society desperately needs more cohesion. This cannot come without values which in turn cannot be generated without vision. It is in the interests of vision bearing groups to respect their differences and to collaborate in persuading the government to cultivate faith communities.

3. Dialogue. You cannot evangelise without a dialogue not just of words but of life. This means sympathetic listening to where others are coming from, however far they are from the Christian revelation, and not just waiting a chance in conversation to tell people where they are wrong.

4. Care for the poor. Scripture calls us to welcome the stranger and care for the dispossessed. Some of the poorest people in Britain today are of minority faith communities. The inflaming of eg. Islamophobia is a serious sin because it hurts individuals and the good name of the Church.

5. Clearer faith. Encounter with adherents of other faith systems can help people gain clarity and depth in their own faith. Islam reminds Evangelical believers about justification by faith as opposed to works. Eastern religions can remind how Christian faith is in a supremely personal God.

6. Deeper discipleship. Buddhist teachings about detachment remind us how self-sacrifice, though central to Jesus’ teaching, is not widespread among his disciples. Realising many people see eastern religions as more serious about the spiritual life can be a wake up call for Christians to refresh discipleship.

7. Jesus. Most Christians readily put love of Jesus before love of the Church. This attitude can serve inter faith encounter. Other faith traditions though suspicious of the Church often honour Jesus, show genuine interest in our devotion to him and can welcome prayer in his name. This serves evangelism.

8. Freedom to evangelise. Conscientious objection to things legalised to please minorities is getting more difficult. The right of faith communities to practice what they believe including evangelism is best protected by their supporting one another against the new totalitarian spirit in government.

9. Challenging relativism. To say someone has the right to do something is not the same as to say they are right to do so. Inter faith encounter is not about making truth relative but the discovery of allies who also believe there is right and wrong in objective terms.

10. Valuing difference. When non Jews first came to Christian faith both they and the first Christians needed converting to realise Isaiah's prophecy that God’s covenant was extended to them (Isaiah 56:1-8). In a similar way today's Christians need to look afresh to see the Spirit working outside the Church.
